Bahrain arrests high-profile activist

A high-profile female Bahraini human rights activist is arrested during a protest in the Bahraini capital amid continued crackdown on anti-government protests in the sheikdom..

Zainab al-Khawaja was put under arrest on Thursday, when she refused to leave a sit-in at a roundabout on the Budaiya highway in the west of Manama after other protesters were dispersed.

The Bahraini activist was handcuffed and taken away by the police.

Elsewhere, activists blocked many roads, including the main highway leading to Manama, heeding a demand by the opposition groups, who had also called for demonstrations.

"The protesters have shown that they are going to keep protesting until they see real change," Maryam al-Khawaja from London-based Bahrain Center for Human Rights told Press TV.

Dozens of people have been killed and many more arrested since the beginning of Bahrain's popular revolution in mid-February.

The latest round of violence comes on the heels of a low-key visit by Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to Britain, where he met with UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

King Hamad reportedly went to Britain to seek further advice from London on the regime's security amid the escalating revolution.

The demonstrators have, however, pledged to keep up their protests until the downfall of the regime.
